Australian Plastic Surgeons' Directory

Plastic Surgeons Australia is designed so you can confirm your surgeon is a
member of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Anyone with a medical degree can perform cosmetic surgery in Australia. But only Society members are plastic surgeons with extensive training.

You can always check whether somebody is a fully trained plastic surgeon by telephoning the Society's hotline 1300 367 446.

Cosmetic surgery is performed for aesthetic reasons, whereas reconstructive surgery is usually performed for medical reasons. People elect to have cosmetic surgery to improve their appearance.

Choosing your Plastic/Cosmetic Surgeon

Selecting a qualified and skilled plastic surgeon is an extremely important factor in the safety and success of your cosmetic plastic surgery. The Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons suggests four steps to help you make an informed decision:

Find a surgeon: Not all medical practitioners performing cosmetic surgery are plastic surgeons so ask your GP for a referral.

Always check the credentials of your surgeon. Ask if they are a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in plastic surgery and a member of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons. Membership of ASPS guarantees that your surgeon's training is recognised in Australia.

Initial consultation. This is an opportunity to ask questions, so make sure you are comfortable with the surgeon you choose. Seek another opinion if you're not sure.

It is false economy to put your health and appearance at risk by plunging in without doing your homework first. Be honest with yourself and your surgeon about your reasons for surgery and your expectations of the result.

Who is suitable for Plastic/Cosmetic Surgery?

Negative feelings about the way one looks can deeply affect a person's self confidence. In the right candidates cosmetic plastic surgery performed by a well-trained and qualified plastic surgeon can make a huge difference to their lives. Surgery will produce physical changes and may even boost a person's self-esteem.
However, if through surgery you hope to influence how someone else feels about you, you may end up disappointed. The best candidates for cosmetic plastic surgery are those with realistic expectations about what they expect from their surgery.
